HISTORY OF ROBINSON BROTHERS

The Robinson Brothers name in the automobile business dates back to April 1946, when M.G. Robinson, Sr. and his brother John, acquired the Kaiser-Frazier franchise in Denham Springs, LA, with an initial investment of $1500.00 Four years later, in 1950, they had the opportunity to start Studebaker franchise about a quarter of a mile down the road. Then in 1953 Robinson Brothers moved to Baton Rouge, LA with a new Studebaker franchise and the Denham Springs operation was sold. From 1953 to 1960 Robinson Brothers held the Studebaker franchise as well as Packard, Volvo, Triumph, and Mercedes Benz.
When 1958 came along another opportunity presented itself to the brothers. The Lincoln, Mercury, English Ford and Edsel dealership became available due to the sudden death of its owner. Both dealerships were then operated in Baton Rouge until 1960 when the Studebaker agency was sold.
In 1961, Mr. M.G. Robinson, Sr., became the sole owner of Robinson Brothers. However, the name was continued because his two sons, Mackie Jr. and Bill, had entered into the family business in the late fifties.
Again another opportunity presented itself to the Robinson family. In 1965, the Lincoln-Mercury franchise in Mobile, AL became available. It was purchased in July and Bill Robinson moved to downtown Mobile and opened for business on September 7th. In later years, Bill's two sons, Steve and Billy, with his daughter, Lisa, became members of the family business team. Currently they have the day-to-day responsibility of leading the dealership as Bill has gradually assumed a less involved role.
In 1970, land was purchased on Beltline Highway in western Mobile and a new, modern facility was moved into in May 1971. In later years, the new car showroom, parts department and the collision repair center were expanded to handle the growing needs of its customers. Then in 1989, an ultra modern, state of the art, new car showroom was built on the site of the former used car department. This allowed the used cars to move to the former new car showroom and have their own indoor display area. In October 2001 the Volvo franchise became available. Consequently, the used car showroom was remodeled to allow for these new Volvos.
